I believe one of the reason why there were few cats around is basically because they used to eat them. And every now and then the restaurant kitty catches would grab an pet cat they may find and take them back to the restaurant. I remember seeing pet cats in glass displays out leading of the restaurants. But somewhere between then and today they forbidden eating felines. So cats are actually not on the menu and now there are pet cats everywhere. Most of them started off in someone's house and acquired thrown away, because so many are very friendly. Also they have this thing about stomach worms. And in those days China had not been as modern as now so tummy worms would have been a problem. Fleas aren't really a problem because they have tile surfaces and wooden furniture.

Then your nine lives of the humble kitten who only wished to help mankind by killing rodents that carried disease took a significant flip for the worse during the middle ages. Where witch hunts and burning up at the stake were typical. A person who didn't like cats somehow connected those to witches and they were burnt at the stake with there owners. The way they made that connection I'll never know. It started off with Pope Gregory IX in the 1232 who considered the normal house kitten as diabolical. Then to make matters worse in1484 along arrived the greatest kitten killer ever, Pope Innocent VIII, who decreed something such as all cats came from hell and really should came back to the fires of hell by flames. Pet cats were mercilessly prosecuted and were burnt so they would go back to the fires of hell. It really is amazing any survived because if you were trapped with a kitty you were burnt together. I still go to cathedral and sometimes I simply wonder why. And of course the Black Death was in the backdrop surviving and growing because there were no pet cats to wipe out the rats that taken the fleas that induced the condition. Then along came up the cat's savior Ruler Louis XIII of France, who in the 1630s repealed regulations and cats once again began to live. However they were still hated and wiped out for many hundreds of years from then on. I have no idea if the Black colored Death subsided but felines once again shielded mankind resistant to the diseases taken by rodents. Plus the famines brought on by mice plagues.
