Then the nine lives of the humble feline who only wished to help mankind by killing rodents that transported disease took a serious move for the more serious during the middle ages. Where witch hunts and using at the stake were the norm. A person who didn't like felines somehow connected them to witches plus they were burnt at the stake with there owners. The way they made that interconnection I'll never know. It began with Pope Gregory IX in the 1232 who deemed the common house pet cat as diabolical. Then to make concerns more serious in1484 along came the greatest cat killer of all time, Pope Innocent VIII, who decreed something along the lines of all cats came from hell and really should delivered to the fires of hell by hearth. Felines were mercilessly prosecuted and were burnt so they might go back to the fires of hell. It really is amazing any survived because if you were trapped with a pet cat you were burnt mutually. I still go to chapel and sometimes I just wonder why. And undoubtedly the Black Death was in the backdrop surviving and thriving because there were no felines to get rid of the rats that transported the fleas that induced the condition. Then along arrived the cat's savior King Louis XIII of France, who in the 1630s repealed the law and cats once again started to live. But they were still hated and killed for many ages after that. I have no idea if the Dark colored Loss of life subsided but pet cats once again protected mankind resistant to the diseases carried by rodents. And the famines due to mice plagues.
I think one of the reasons there were not many cats around is because they used to eat them. And once in a while the restaurant pet cat catches would pick up an feline they could find and take them back again to the restaurant. I recall seeing pet cats in glass displays out the front of the restaurants. But somewhere within then and now they banned eating cats. So cats are actually not on the menu and now there are pet cats everywhere. Most of them started off in someone's house and acquired thrown away, because so many are extremely friendly. Also they may have this thing about belly worms. And in those days China had not been as modern as now so stomach worms would have been a problem. Fleas aren't really a problem because they have tile flooring surfaces and real wood furniture.
