Then the nine lives of the humble pet cat who only wanted to help mankind by getting rid of rodents that transported disease took a serious turn for the worse during the dark ages. Where witch hunts and using at the stake were typical. Someone who didn't like pet cats somehow connected them to witches plus they were burnt at the stake with there owners. How they made that connection I'll never know. It started off with Pope Gregory IX in the 1232 who deemed the common house cat as diabolical. Then to make issues even worse in1484 along came up the greatest kitty killer of all time, Pope Innocent VIII, who decreed something along the lines of all cats came from hell and should returned to the fires of hell by fire. Pet cats were mercilessly prosecuted and were burnt so they might go back to the fires of hell. It is amazing any survived because if you were captured with a cat you were burnt alongside one another. I still go to chapel and sometimes I just wonder why. And undoubtedly the Black Death was in the backdrop surviving and thriving because there were no cats to wipe out the rats that taken the fleas that caused the condition. Then along emerged the cat's savior Ruler Louis XIII of France, who in the 1630s repealed the law and cats once again started to live. But they were still hated and wiped out for many generations after that. I don't know if the African american Fatality subsided but felines once again safeguarded mankind from the diseases taken by rodents. Plus the famines due to mice plagues.
If this attitude towards cats dates back generations then one can understand why historians say the Dark colored Death started in China. Where there are rats and no cats then the rats dominate and that could have been a precursor for the condition to get close to people. Now after i go back to China you may still find rats running around but not so many in the casing estates. There are numerous down by the river. Also they employ a efficient rubbish tidy up system that maintains the metropolitan areas very clean. Where I stay the rubbish is gathered everyday. That could also keep carefully the rat human population down. And with so many discarded felines running around the rats don't have much of an opportunity. I've never seen this but I suspect the government picks up a great deal of pet cats. There used to be colonies of stray pet cats residing in some places but now I don't see them any more.
