I believe one of the reasons there were not many cats around is because they used to consume them. And once in a while the restaurant feline catches would pick up an feline they may find and take them back again to the restaurant. I recall seeing cats in glass displays out leading of the restaurants. But somewhere between then and today they suspended eating cats. So cats are now not on the menu and now there are pet cats everywhere. Many of them began in someone's house and got thrown away, since several are incredibly friendly. Also they have got this thing about stomach worms. And in those times China was not as modern as now so tummy worms is a problem. Fleas aren't a really problem because they have got tile floors and solid wood furniture.
Then the nine lives of the humble pet cat who only wished to help mankind by getting rid of rodents that taken disease took a serious convert for the more serious during the middle ages. Where witch hunts and using at the stake were the norm. A person who didn't like pet cats somehow connected them to witches and they were burnt at the stake with there owners. That they made that connection I'll never know. It began with Pope Gregory IX in the 1232 who deemed the common house kitten as diabolical. Then to make concerns worse in1484 along emerged the greatest feline killer ever, Pope Innocent VIII, who decreed something along the lines of all cats came from hell and really should came back to the fires of hell by open fire. Pet cats were mercilessly prosecuted and were burnt so they would go back to the fires of hell. It really is amazing any survived because if you were captured with a kitty you were burnt along. I still go to chapel and sometimes I just wonder why. And of course the Black Fatality was in the background surviving and flourishing because there have been no pet cats to eliminate the rats that transported the fleas that caused the condition. Then along emerged the cat's savior King Louis XIII of France, who in the 1630s repealed regulations and cats once more started to live. However they were still hated and wiped out for many centuries from then on. I have no idea if the Black color Death subsided but pet cats once again protected mankind resistant to the diseases taken by rodents. As well as the famines brought on by mice plagues.
