Then your nine lives of the humble pet cat who only wanted to help mankind by killing rodents that carried disease took a significant flip for the worse during the middle ages. Where witch hunts and losing at the stake were the norm. Somebody who didn't like felines somehow connected them to witches and they were burnt at the stake with there owners. The way they made that connection I'll never know. It began with Pope Gregory IX in the 1232 who considered the normal house kitty as diabolical. Then to make things more serious in1484 along came the greatest kitten killer of all time, Pope Innocent VIII, who decreed something such as all cats originated from hell and really should returned to the fires of hell by flames. Felines were mercilessly prosecuted and were burnt so they might return to the fires of hell. It is amazing any survived because if you were trapped with a kitten you were burnt collectively. I still go to chapel and sometimes I just wonder why. And of course the Black Fatality was in the backdrop surviving and thriving because there were no felines to eliminate the rats that carried the fleas that brought on the disease. Then along emerged the cat's savior Ruler Louis XIII of France, who in the 1630s repealed the law and cats once again began to live. However they were still hated and wiped out for many ages from then on. I have no idea if the African american Fatality subsided but felines once again covered mankind contrary to the diseases taken by rodents. Along with the famines brought on by mice plagues.
If this frame of mind towards cats dates back generations then one can realize why historians say the Black Death were only available in China. Where there are rats and no cats then your rats dominate and that could have been a precursor for the disease to get near to people. Now after i get back to China there are still rats running around but not so many in the property estates. There are numerous down by the river. Also they have a very efficient rubbish clean up system that keeps the towns very clean. Where I stay the rubbish is gathered everyday. That could also keep carefully the rat inhabitants down. And with so many discarded felines playing around the rats don't possess much of the opportunity. I've never seen this but I think the government picks up a great deal of cats. There used to be colonies of stray cats living in some places but now I don't see them any longer.
