Then the nine lives of the humble pet cat who only wanted to help mankind by eradicating rodents that transported disease took a serious flip for the even worse during the dark ages. Where witch hunts and using at the stake were typical. Somebody who didn't like pet cats somehow connected these to witches plus they were burnt at the stake with there owners. The way they made that connection I'll never know. It began with Pope Gregory IX in the 1232 who regarded the normal house cat as diabolical. Then to make matters worse in1484 along came up the greatest cat killer ever, Pope Innocent VIII, who decreed something such as all cats came from hell and should delivered to the fires of hell by flame. Cats were mercilessly prosecuted and were burnt so they might return to the fires of hell. It is amazing any survived because if you were trapped with a cat you were burnt jointly. I still go to chapel and sometimes I simply wonder why. And undoubtedly the Black Fatality was in the backdrop surviving and thriving because there have been no felines to kill the rats that carried the fleas that caused the disease. Then along arrived the cat's savior King Louis XIII of France, who in the 1630s repealed the law and cats once again began to live. But they were still hated and wiped out for many centuries from then on. I have no idea if the Dark colored Fatality subsided but cats once again covered mankind against the diseases taken by rodents. Along with the famines due to mice plagues.
I believe one of the reasons there were not many cats around is basically because they used to eat them. And once in a while the restaurant pet cat catches would pick up an kitten they could find and take them back to the restaurant. I recall seeing cats in glass exhibits out the front of the restaurants. But somewhere between then and now they restricted eating felines. So cats are actually not on the menu and now there are felines everywhere. Many of them began in someone's house and got thrown away, since several are incredibly friendly. Also they may have this thing about abdomen worms. And in those days China was not as modern as now so belly worms would have been a problem. Fleas aren't a really problem because they have got tile flooring and real wood furniture.
