Pet cats and mankind have been surviving in harmony for many years but that hasn't always been the case. There were times when pet cats have been nearly destroyed in the name of God. And what occurred the Black Death reigned supreme for considerably longer than it should. So we will go back to the origins of recorded background to the time of the pharaohs of Egypt. Here cats were revered as Gods and many were mummified to previous for eternity. Because the cats guarded the grain warehouses and wiped out the rats and mice that given on the grain. Therefore reducing famines, which were the curse of Egypt. It was illegal to kill cats in those times, like cows in India today.
Then the nine lives of the humble pet cat who only wanted to help mankind by killing rodents that transported disease took a serious convert for the even worse during the dark ages. Where witch hunts and using up at the stake were the norm. A person who didn't like pet cats somehow connected those to witches and they were burnt at the stake with there owners. The way they made that connection I'll never know. It started off with Pope Gregory IX in the 1232 who deemed the normal house cat as diabolical. Then to make things worse in1484 along came the greatest pet cat killer of all time, Pope Innocent VIII, who decreed something such as all cats came from hell and should went back to the fires of hell by fireplace. Pet cats were mercilessly prosecuted and were burnt so they might go back to the fires of hell. It is amazing any survived because if you were captured with a kitty you were burnt along. I still go to chapel and sometimes I just wonder why. And undoubtedly the Black Loss of life was in the background surviving and thriving because there were no cats to destroy the rats that carried the fleas that triggered the disease. Then along emerged the cat's savior King Louis XIII of France, who in the 1630s repealed the law and cats once more began to live. However they were still hated and killed for many centuries after that. I have no idea if the Black Fatality subsided but felines once again protected mankind against the diseases transported by rodents. Plus the famines brought on by mice plagues.
