Then the nine lives of the humble kitten who only wanted to help mankind by getting rid of rodents that transported disease took a significant flip for the even worse during the dark ages. Where witch hunts and burning up at the stake were typical. Somebody who didn't like felines somehow connected these to witches and they were burnt at the stake with there owners. That they made that interconnection I'll never know. It started off with Pope Gregory IX in the 1232 who deemed the normal house kitty as diabolical. Then to make things even worse in1484 along came up the greatest kitten killer of all time, Pope Innocent VIII, who decreed something along the lines of all cats came from hell and really should came back to the fires of hell by flame. Felines were mercilessly prosecuted and were burnt so they would go back to the fires of hell. It is amazing any survived because if you were found with a pet cat you were burnt along. I still go to cathedral and sometimes I simply wonder why. And undoubtedly the Black Loss of life was in the backdrop surviving and growing because there have been no felines to get rid of the rats that carried the fleas that caused the disease. Then along emerged the cat's savior Ruler Louis XIII of France, who in the 1630s repealed the law and cats once again began to live. But they were still hated and killed for many decades from then on. I have no idea if the African american Death subsided but pet cats once again covered mankind contrary to the diseases transported by rodents. Along with the famines due to mice plagues.
If this frame of mind towards cats dates back generations the other can understand why historians say the Dark Death were only available in China. Where there are rats no cats then the rats dominate and that could have been a precursor for the disease to get close to people. Now whenever i go back to China there are still rats running around however, not so many in the property estates. There are various down by the river. Also they have a very efficient rubbish tidy up system that maintains the towns very clean. Where I stay the rubbish is accumulated everyday. That could also keep the rat population down. And with so many discarded pet cats running around the rats don't possess much of an opportunity. I've never seen this but I believe the government accumulates a lot of pet cats. There used to be colonies of stray felines moving into some places but now I don't see them any more.
