I think one of the reasons there were few cats around is basically because they used to eat them. And once in a while the restaurant pet cat catches would grab an pet cat they may find and take them back again to the restaurant. I recall seeing felines in glass displays out leading of the restaurants. But somewhere between then and today they forbidden eating pet cats. So cats are actually not on the menu and now there are felines everywhere. Most of them began in someone's house and acquired thrown away, because so many are extremely friendly. Also they have this thing about belly worms. And in those days China had not been as modern as now so stomach worms is a problem. Fleas aren't a really problem because they may have tile surfaces and wooden furniture.
Cats actually take a few parasites, a few fleas and some diseases and a few can change serious but not many. If cats were leading to too much sickness they would not need invaded our lives as well as they may have. But you may still find people out there who do not like felines. When I first went to China about twenty years ago there have been very few cats coping with people and incredibly few wild pet cats. I was surprised because I've acquired cats all my life and I never thought people didn't like cats. But in China folks said cats transported disease which was it. I think that may have something to do with that cat sick and tired you get in your vision. Not serious only a slight problem for a week And if you were pregnant you had to stay away from cats. I think they were referring to toxoplasmosis, but if you get that when you are a youngster it will not affect your child. In addition they said felines were dirty but I don't think so. I believe felines are one of the cleanest domestic pets you can have. I think that came from the cats eradicating the rats and mice. Because rats are incredibly dirty pets or animals then because the felines killed and ate them they will also be dusty. A dirty by connection type of thing. Also there have been some big sewer rats working round during the day. Once I observed a rat and a kitty face off each other and the cat wasn't much bigger than the rat. These were about a ft . apart staring the other person out and the cat ran away. I'm not stunned the rat's pearly whites were bigger that the pet cats.
Then the nine lives of the humble kitty who only wished to help mankind by eliminating rodents that taken disease took a significant flip for the even worse during the dark ages. Where witch hunts and losing at the stake were typical. Somebody who didn't like felines somehow connected them to witches and they were burnt at the stake with there owners. How they made that interconnection I'll never know. It began with Pope Gregory IX in the 1232 who considered the normal house pet cat as diabolical. Then to make things even worse in1484 along came the greatest pet cat killer of all time, Pope Innocent VIII, who decreed something such as all cats originated from hell and should went back to the fires of hell by flame. Pet cats were mercilessly prosecuted and were burnt so they might go back to the fires of hell. It really is amazing any survived because if you were caught with a pet cat you were burnt collectively. I still go to church and sometimes I just wonder why. And undoubtedly the Black Loss of life was in the backdrop surviving and thriving because there were no felines to destroy the rats that carried the fleas that induced the condition. Then along came up the cat's savior King Louis XIII of France, who in the 1630s repealed the law and cats once more started to live. But they were still hated and wiped out for many decades after that. I have no idea if the Dark colored Death subsided but felines once again secured mankind contrary to the diseases taken by rodents. And the famines due to mice plagues.
