I think one of the reasons there were not many cats around is because they used to consume them. And once in a while the restaurant pet cat catches would grab an pet cat they may find and take them back to the restaurant. I recall seeing cats in glass shows out the front of the restaurants. But somewhere between then and today they prohibited eating cats. So cats are now not on the menu and now there are cats everywhere. Most of them began in someone's house and got thrown away, since many are incredibly friendly. Also they have got this thing about belly worms. And in those times China was not as modern as now so stomach worms would have been a problem. Fleas aren't a really problem because they have got tile flooring and wooden furniture.
Then your nine lives of the humble cat who only wished to help mankind by eradicating rodents that carried disease took a serious convert for the even worse during the dark ages. Where witch hunts and using at the stake were typical. Somebody who didn't like cats somehow connected these to witches plus they were burnt at the stake with there owners. How they made that interconnection I'll never know. It started off with Pope Gregory IX in the 1232 who deemed the common house feline as diabolical. Then to make things even worse in1484 along emerged the greatest kitten killer of all time, Pope Innocent VIII, who decreed something along the lines of all cats came from hell and really should delivered to the fires of hell by hearth. Felines were mercilessly prosecuted and were burnt so they might go back to the fires of hell. It is amazing any survived because if you were caught with a cat you were burnt jointly. I still go to cathedral and sometimes I simply wonder why. And undoubtedly the Black Loss of life was in the background surviving and flourishing because there were no felines to destroy the rats that transported the fleas that brought on the disease. Then along arrived the cat's savior King Louis XIII of France, who in the 1630s repealed regulations and cats once again started to live. But they were still hated and killed for many centuries after that. I have no idea if the Black Death subsided but felines once again guarded mankind resistant to the diseases carried by rodents. As well as the famines brought on by mice plagues.
